Legal Counsel (Commercial)
We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic Commercial Counsel to join our global Commercial Legal team. You will play an important role in supporting Adyen’s continued success by working closely with our Sales teams and internal partners on a broad portfolio of topics, including contract negotiations, template drafting, and general commercial matters supporting the Asia Pacific region. You have a strong work ethic and flexibility, and are comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy. You are a pro-active legal or contracts professional with a penchant for helping to build a vibrant business and have a strong bias for action.
The Global Commercial Legal team is centered in Amsterdam and the United States. However, as Adyen is a global company with offices, entities, and boards all over the world, you will be required to apply your knowledge globally. You have a passion for our business and you would like to contribute to ensure the further growth of Adyen.
What you'll do
- Provide strategic legal advice across various commercial functions, advising stakeholders in our sales, account management, partnerships, product, and regulatory teams, primarily in Japan.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of commercial agreements, including complex, multi-jurisdictional service agreements, partnership agreements, licensing agreements, and bank partnerships.
- Provide legal and commercial support in relation to existing contracts and provide support in the event of any disputes or potential disputes;
- Assist with localizing and improving standard form agreements and legal processes that are suitable for the Japanese market;
- Contribute to business and legal initiatives globally covering a variety of topics, including implementation of regulatory requirements in Adyen’s commercial agreements and cross-functional projects.
- Work autonomously in a cross-functional manner.
- Build strong relationships with colleagues, leaders, and stakeholders across the company.
- Participate in training of sales and commercial colleagues across APAC.
Who you are
- You are an attorney in good standing in your local bar and registered to practice law in Japan.
- You have at least five (5) years of legal experience, either as an attorney or in-house counsel in an international setting advising on commercial matters, preferably focused on payments, financial services and/or fintech industry.
- You have excellent communication skills, are comfortable interfacing with senior management, and are comfortable in tough negotiations.
- You can work effectively with cross-functional stakeholders across different time zones, independently, and with good judgment to escalate issues when needed.
- You are a team player and can collaborate with other legal counsels based in jurisdictions across the US, LATAM, EMEA, and APAC.
- You are fluent in English and Japanese, both written and spoken.
- You are available to work from our Tokyo office and travel to other offices periodically.
